I applied to my hall committee just before first year, before I even moved into Bankside as I was eager to make connections and be a part of the community in my new home. Though, at first, a daunting commitment to take on as a first year, I can gladly say I have no regrets.
Here are my top reasons why you should consider applying yourself!
- Building community
Being on your hall committee opens doors for you to meet more people in your hall and become part of the community! I feel that my role allowed me to settle into halls life and make Bankside really start to feel like a home.
- Get what you want from your own halls experience!
Put students and their needs at the front of halls life creating events that appeal to you and your hallmates, whether that be open bar parties or relaxing yoga mornings. My time on hall committee saw us organise lots of cinema trips- a great way to see the latest releases, with friends, on a budget.
- Gain invaluable experience
Being on your halls committee is great for the CV, giving you experience of setting up, marketing and running events, working in a team to represent the interests of others.
- Explore your creative side!
Come up with fun, exciting events and market them in interesting, eye-catching ways, using your creativity to encourage people to socialise and meet each other. You can also organise creative events, like pottery painting and arts workshops to engage with this creativity and socialise with others over it.
- Build your skillset
Working as a comms officer has introduced me to a plethora of tools such as canva and capcut that I now use regularly. Getting involved has given me a more comprehensive understanding of what it takes to organise events and I now feel much more capable of doing so myself.
Overall, being on your hall committee is a rewarding, exciting and character-building experience which allows you to get involved in and contribute to the community environment of halls-life.
Apply to your hall committee to make the most of your time in halls!
