How to ensure a smooth arrival

Arriving in London can be both thrilling and challenging, especially when it comes to getting from the airport to your university hall. In this guide, we'll provide you with essential tips to ensure a smooth arrival, making your transition to student life in London hassle-free and enjoyable.

To Bankside House 

For travel options from where you are to the hall, see: Bankside House on Google Maps.

  • Follow the signs to the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect trains. You can catch these trains from Heathrow's terminals, and they both connect to London Paddington Station.
  • Enjoy a comfortable journey to London Paddington Station, which typically takes around 15-25 minutes depending on the service you choose.
  • Once you arrive at Paddington Station, head towards the London Underground (Tube) station located within the complex. Take the Circle Line (yellow line) to Southwark Station.
  • Exit Southwark Station, and as you walk along Blackfriars Road heading southeast, you'll soon reach Southwark Street, where Bankside House, LSE, is located. It's a short walk.
  • Follow signs to the Gatwick Express, a dedicated train service to London Victoria Station.
  • Enjoy a swift journey to London Victoria Station, which takes approximately 30-35 minutes.
  • Upon reaching Victoria Station, proceed to the London Underground (Tube) station within the station complex. Take the Victoria Line (light blue line) to Vauxhall Station.
  • At Vauxhall Station, transfer to the South Western Railway service towards London Waterloo. Alight at London Waterloo Station.
  • From London Waterloo Station, you can either enjoy a scenic walk along the River Thames or take a short taxi or bus ride to Bankside House, LSE, located on Southwark Street.

If you have heavy bags and don't mind a slightly longer journey but with no train changes, you can get the below option:

  • Walk to Gatwick Airport train station located in the south terminal. Take the ThamesLink to Bedford - you need to get off at Blackfriars.
  • Once at Blackfriars Station, exit and proceed to walk towards Southwark Street, where Bankside House is just a short walk away. You'll easily spot it on your right-hand side.
  • Head towards Luton Airport bus station and get on the shuttle bus to Luton Station Interchange
  • Once you're at Luton Station Interchange, take the Thameslink to Three Bridges - you need to get off at Blackfriars.
  • Once at Blackfriars Station, exit and proceed to walk towards Southwark Street, where Bankside House is just a short walk away. You'll easily spot it on your right-hand side.
  • Follow the signs to the Stansted Airport railway station. Purchase a ticket for a Greater Anglia or Stansted Express train to Liverpool Street Station.
  • Board your chosen train and relax during the journey to Liverpool Street Station. The ride typically takes around 45-50 minutes.
  • Upon arrival at Liverpool Street Station, make your way to the London Underground (Tube) station. Take the Northern Line Southbound towards Moorgate and get off at London Bridge.
  • From London Bridge it is a 10 min walk to Bankside House.

To Butler's Wharf

  • Follow signs to the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect trains. These trains connect to London Paddington Station.
  • Enjoy a comfortable ride to London Paddington Station, which typically takes around 15-25 minutes, depending on the service you choose.
  • Upon reaching Paddington Station, proceed to the London Underground (Tube) station within the complex. Take the Bakerloo Line Southbound from Paddington Station to Elephant & Castle - you need to get off at Baker Street.
  • From Baker Street you will need to take the Jubilee Line Southbound to Stratford - you will need to get off at London Bridge
  • From London Bridge, it is a 12 minute walk to Butler's Wharf

If you have heavy bags and don't mind a slightly longer journey but with no train changes, you can get the below option:

  • From. Heathrow Teerminal 2 & 3, get the Elizabeth Line to Abbey Wood - you need to get off at Bond Street.
  • Once at Bond Street, take the Jubilee Line Southbound to Stratford - you need to get off at London Bridge.
  • From London Bridge, it is a 12 minute walk to Butler's Wharf
  • Walk to Gatwick Airport train station located in the south terminal. Take the ThamesLink to Bedford - you will need to get off at London Bridge
  • From London Bridge, it is a 12 minute walk to Butler's Wharf
  • Head towards Luton Airport bus station and get on the shuttle bus to Luton Station Interchange
  • Once you're at Luton Station Interchange, take the Thameslink to Brighton - you need to get off at London Bridge.
  • From London Bridge, it is a 12 minute walk to Butler's Wharf
  • Follow the signs to the Stansted Airport railway station. Purchase a ticket for a Greater Anglia or Stansted Express train heading to London Liverpool Street Station.
  • Enjoy the journey to Liverpool Street Station, which typically takes around 45-50 minutes.
  • Upon reaching Liverpool Street Station, make your way to the London Underground (Tube) station within the same complex. Take the Circle Line (yellow line) Eastbound towards Edgware Road and disembark at Tower Hill Station.
  • From Tower Hill Station, you can take a leisurely walk along the Thames Path towards Butler's Wharf, where LSE Butler's Wharf Residence is located. It's a picturesque stroll, and you'll soon spot the residence on your right.

To Carr-Saunders Hall

  • Make your way to the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect trains that go to London Paddington Station.
  • Enjoy a comfortable journey to London Paddington Station, which typically takes around 15-25 minutes, depending on the service you choose.
  • From Paddington Station, take the London Underground (Tube) - the Circle Line (yellow line) to Edgware Road - you will need to get off at Great Portland Street.
  • From Great Portland Street, Carr-Saunders Hall is a short walk away.
  • Follow signs to the Gatwick Express, a dedicated train service to London Victoria Station.
  • Enjoy a swift journey to London Victoria Station, which takes approximately 30-35 minutes.

  • Head towards Luton Airport bus station and get on the shuttle bus to Luton Station Interchange
  • Once you're at Luton Station Interchange, take the Thameslink to Three Bridges - you need to get off at St Pancras International.
  • Once you have reached St Pancras International, you will need to get the underground Tube on the Circle, Hammersmith & City Line (yellow and pink line) to Hammersmith - you will need to get off at Great Portland Street. 
  • Exit Blackfriars Station and walk toward Cartwright Gardens. Carr-Saunders Hall is conveniently located on Cartwright Gardens.
  • Make your way to the Stansted Airport railway station. Purchase a ticket for a Greater Anglia or Stansted Express train heading to London Liverpool Street Station.
  • Board your chosen train and enjoy the ride to London Liverpool Street Station, which usually takes around 45-50 minutes - you will need to get off at Tottenham Hale.
  • Upon reaching Tottenham Hale, proceed to the London Underground (Tube) station within the complex. Take the Victoria Line (light blue line) Southbound to Brixton - you will need to get off at Warren Street.
  • From Warren Street Station, Carr-Saunders Hall is a short walk away on Cartwright Gardens.

To High Holborn

  • Make your way to Heathrow's Tube station and get on the Elizabeth Line (purple line) to Central London - you will need to get off at Tottenham Court Road.
  • From Tottenham Court Road, High Holborn is a 5 min walk away. 
  • Walk to Gatwick Airport train station located in the south terminal. Take the ThamesLink to Bedford - you will need to get off at Farringdon
  • Once you have reached Farringdon, you will need to head to the London Underground Tube station. From here you will need to get the Elizabeth Line Westbound to Paddington - you need to get off at Tottenham Court Road
  • From Tottenham Court Road, High Holborn is a 5 min walk away. 
  • Head towards Luton Airport bus station and get on the shuttle bus to Luton Station Interchange
  • Once you're at Luton Station Interchange, take the Thameslink to Three Bridges - you need to get off at Farringdon
  • Once you have reached Farringdon, you will need to head to the London Underground Tube station. From here you will need to get the Elizabeth Line Westbound to Paddington - you need to get off at Tottenham Court Road

To Lilian Knowles House

  • Make your way to Heathrow's Tube station and get on the Elizabeth Line (purple line) to Central London - you will need to get off at Liverpool Street.
  • From Liverpool Street, High Holborn is a 5 min walk away. 
  • Walk to Gatwick Airport train station located in the south terminal. Take the ThamesLink to Cambridge - you will need to get off at London Bridge
  • Once you have reached London Bridge you will need to head to the London Underground Tube. From here get the Northern Line Northbound to Edgware - you will need to get off at Moorgate.
  • Once you've reached Moorgate Lilian Knowles is a 12 min walk. 
  • Head towards Luton Airport bus station and get on the shuttle bus to Luton Station Interchange
  • Once you're at Luton Station Interchange, take the train to St Pancras International. Once you've reached St Pancras International you will need to head to the London Underground Tube and get on the Metropolitan Line Eastbound to Aldgate - you will need to get off at Aldgate
  • From Aldgate Lilian Knowles is around a 10 min walk. 
  • Make your way to the Stansted Airport railway station. Purchase a ticket for a Greater Anglia or Stansted Express train heading to London Liverpool Street Station.
  • Board your chosen train and enjoy the ride to London Liverpool Street Station, which usually takes around 45-50 minutes.

To Passfield Hall

  • From St Pancras you can either get a taxi to the London Underground Tube to Euston Station, or Passfield Hall is a 12 minute walk from St Pancras International station.
  • Proceed to the Stansted Airport railway station. Purchase a ticket for a Greater Anglia or Stansted Express train heading to London Liverpool Street Station - you will need to get off at Tottenham Hale.
  • Once you've reached Tottenham Hale you will need to head to the London Underground Tube and get on the Victoria Line Southbound to Brixton - you need to get off at Euston.
  • From Euston, Passfield Hall is a short walk away.

To Rosebery Hall

  • From Paddington Station, take the London Underground (Tube) - the Circle Line (yellow line) to King's Cross Station. Then take the Northern Line (black line) to Angel station.
  • Once you arrive at Angel Station, you can walk to Rosebery Hall at 90 Rosebery Avenue.

Alternatively, you can:

  • Take the Elizabeth line from the airport to Farringdon station.
  • From Farringdon Station, you can walk to the hall, take an uber or bus 153 north bound to Rosebery Hall.
  • Walk to Gatwick Airport train station located in the south terminal. Take the ThamesLink to Cambridge - you will need to get off at London Bridge
  • From London Bridge, proceed to the London Underground (Tube) station within the complex. Take the Northern Line (black line) Northbound to Edgware - you will need to get off at Angel.
  • Upon arriving at Angel Station, you can walk to Rosebery Hall, situated at 90 Rosebery Avenue.
  • Head towards Luton Airport bus station and get on the shuttle bus to Luton Station Interchange
  • Once you're at Luton Station Interchange, take the Thameslink to St Pancras International - you need to get off at St Pancras International
  • Once at St Pancras International you will need to head to the London Underground Tube and get on the Northern Line (black line) Southbound to Morden - you will need to get off at Angel
  • Upon arriving at Angel Station, you can walk to Rosebery Hall, situated at 90 Rosebery Avenue.

If you have heavy bag you could get a taxi/uber from St Pancras International to Rosebery Hall - it is a 12 minute journey. 

  • Proceed to the Stansted Airport railway station. Purchase a ticket for a Greater Anglia or Stansted Express train heading to London Liverpool Street Station - you will need to get off at Tottenham Hale.
  • Once youv've reached Tottenham Hale, head to the London Undergournd Tube and get on the Victoria Line (light blue line) Southbound to Brixton - you will need to get off at Euston.
  • Upon arriving at Euston, you need to get the Northern Line (black line) Southbound to Morden - you will need to get off at Angel.
  • Upon arriving at Angel Station, you can walk to Rosebery Hall, situated at 90 Rosebery Avenue.

If you have heavy bag you could get a taxi/uber from Euston to Rosebery Hall - it is a 12 minute journey. 


To Sidney Webb House

  • Upon your arrival at Heathrow Airport, head to the Elizabeth Line and get on the train to Central London - you will need to get off at Liverpool Street.  
  • From Liverpool Street Station, take the Northern Line (black line) Southbound to Morden - you will need to get off at Borough.
  • Sidney Webb House is situated at a short walk from Borough Station.
  • Follow signs to the Gatwick Express, a dedicated train service to Bedford - you will need to get off at London Bridge.
  • From London Bridge Sidney Webb is around a 10 minute walk - if you have lots of bags you could get a taxi/uber. 
  • Once you're at Luton Station Interchange, take the Thameslink to Rainham (Kent) - you need to get off at London Bridge
  • Head towards Luton Airport bus station and get on the shuttle bus to Luton Station Interchange
  • From London Bridge Sidney Webb is around a 10 minute walk - if you have lots of bags you could get a taxi/uber. 
  • After landing at Stansted Airport, proceed to the Stansted Airport railway station. Purchase a ticket for a Greater Anglia or Stansted Express train heading to London Liverpool Street Station.
  • Enjoy the ride to London Liverpool Street Station, which usually takes around 45-50 minutes.
  • From Liverpool Street Station, you will need to walk to Moorgate Tube station (6 min walk) and take the take the London Underground (Tube) Northern Line (black line) to Morden - you will need to get off at Borough.
